10% of Germany's energy requirements are now estimated to arise from the use of computers

In a recent program on German TV station, ARD, Ruckschau Folge 242: How much energy does your computer need? Thursday 8th October 2009 19.45 it was estimated that 10% of the country's energy consumption comes from the IT sector.
  • This equals 33 million tons of CO2 - which is increasing
  • The production of 1 PC is estimated to cosume 2,79 kWh energy, 850 kg Greenhouse gasses,  1500 liters water, 23 kilograms various chemicals, some gold, silver, platinum and very rare metal Tantal (causing deadly wars in Congo!)
  • 4 hours at PC per day consumes up to 767 kWh - equals 7 refrigerators! 
  • One single query (e.g. Google) consumes 4 Watt - equals 1h of LED-lamp
  • 1 Online-Auction (e.g. e-buy) produces 18g CO-2 - equals cooking 1 cup of coffee
  • Power consumption of servers and data centres in germany: 10,1 Terrawatt hours. (10 000 000 000 000 Watt hours)
  • This requires 4 medium size coal power plants.
